Owning a sense of hiraeth for the town of Austin, Texas is strange. Especially for a poet that is Floridian not a Texan. Writing “Walking on a Movie Set Uninvited” begins as a reprisal. All of the poetry binge written in the city itself is lost. Sans the environs, this poetry was written in hiraeth for a town that was circa 2011 in coffee shops closer to where he calls home.

This work is a microchapbook of poetry. Based loosely off chapbooks of the past, a chapbook is typically a brief sample of work or different works sampled down to about twenty five to thirty pages. A microchapbook is even shorter. This particular one has six poems and stands at about nine pages in length.

The work itself contains some subtle themes of recovery, alienation, rumination, dreams, nightmares, and music that are intended for an mature audience.

But if anything, the poet hopes you retain some appreciation of the city from which this work derives inspiration and a penchant for treating everyone around more kindly.

Lindbergh recounts more than just the May 1927 flight from New York to Paris; he builds the story from his background in aviation, his early years as an airmail pilot, and the conception of the flight itself. The writing blends mechanical precision with awe for flight, documenting each challenge with clarity—from modifying the plane for maximum fuel efficiency to navigating with no radio and minimal visibility. His voice remains focused and exact, keeping readers in the cockpit with him.

The book also reflects Lindbergh’s introspection. He discusses the philosophical drive behind exploration and the solitude that both tests and rewards a pilot. Rather than portray the flight as a stunt, he frames it as a logical extension of human ambition and scientific progress. Every decision, from weight reduction to route planning, reveals a calculated risk rather than a reckless dare. His words elevate the journey into a disciplined act of vision and willpower.

Franklin begins with his early years in Boston, detailing his modest upbringing, his self-education, and his eventual rise as a printer and writer in Philadelphia. He shares lessons from his youth with an honest, reflective tone, emphasizing the value of discipline, frugality, and constant learning. Through anecdotes and observations, he shows how he cultivated both intellect and character through deliberate practice and public service.

As Franklin’s influence grows, so does the scope of his contributions. He documents his founding of civic institutions, his scientific experiments, and his diplomatic efforts abroad. Though unfinished, the autobiography paints a rich portrait of Enlightenment ideals in action. Franklin doesn’t just describe his life—he models a philosophy of progress and self-made success that continues to inspire readers centuries later.

Whistler begins the book by recounting the circumstances of the 1878 lawsuit he brought against Ruskin, who had accused him of “flinging a pot of paint in the public’s face.” Rather than merely presenting a legal narrative, Whistler turns the trial into a theatrical event, filled with biting commentary and flamboyant prose. He does not retreat from controversy; he amplifies it, using his literary voice to elevate his persona as a misunderstood yet visionary artist.

Beyond the courtroom, Whistler includes letters, essays, and press clippings that illustrate the often absurd and hostile reception of his work. He mocks critics, defends the role of the artist, and articulates his belief in “art for art’s sake.” Through sarcasm, irony, and self-aware flair, Whistler refuses to be diminished by public opinion. He embraces the artist as provocateur, crafting a defiant and enduring piece of art criticism that doubles as a performance.

O’Donnell structures the book as a series of case files, each detailing a haunting or supernatural experience he either witnessed or investigated. He narrates these events with a storytelling style meant to intrigue and unsettle. Rather than analyzing paranormal phenomena with scientific detachment, he embraces the mystery and drama of each encounter, reinforcing his belief in life after death and the presence of unseen forces.

The book explores various types of hauntings, including ghostly apparitions, poltergeist activity, and psychic impressions left behind in places steeped in tragedy. O’Donnell doesn’t merely report; he reacts and theorizes, offering readers his personal take on why these events happen and how the living can interact with or protect themselves from such forces. His approach reflects early 20th-century spiritualism and its fascination with the unknown.

Thoreau structured Walden as a series of essays, blending philosophy, natural observation, and social critique. He wrote about his day-to-day experiences, including building his cabin, growing his own food, and finding contentment in solitude. Throughout the book, he emphasized the value of self-reliance, spiritual awakening, and the deep lessons one can draw from nature. Thoreau did not isolate himself to escape humanity but to understand it better, and his writing captures that purpose with both poetic insight and sharp criticism.

In later chapters, Thoreau turned from his immediate environment to broader reflections on time, economy, education, and personal freedom. He questioned the blind pursuit of wealth and progress, urging people to slow down and examine their lives. His descriptions of the changing seasons around the pond serve as both literal and metaphorical reminders of the rhythms of life. Readers encounter not just a man in the woods, but a thinker urging others to live more meaningfully and with conscious intention.

Feeling a true sense of herself for the first time, Marsha launches a significant career and reconnects with Jay, a former colleague and recent widower. They marry and have many joyful years together—until Jay’s buried past comes to get them and their life together starts to crumble. Ignoring harsh truths as things deteriorate, she insists they’ll make it to the other side of this hard time with their marriage intact.

Then the true calamity they’re facing becomes apparent and shatters her. With time, reflection, and the ability to recognize support when its offered, she emerges from her grief sure-footed and able to have a happy, fulfilling life. In this compelling, generous, and, above all, inspiring memoir, Marsha reckons with the way trauma spreads from generation to generation and person to person, and learns that the effects of trauma need not last a lifetime.
